It shows the scene of the legendary apparition of the Virgin of El Rocío to a hunter in the forest of Las Rocinas.
This ceramic panel was placed on the façade of the old hermitage of El Rocío during its restoration in 1919. Two of the same size (167’8 x 252 cm.) were made, one on each side of the balcony of the building. Of these, only this one is preserved, which is currently located in the corridor that joins the two exhibition rooms of the Treasury of the Virgen del Rocío, behind the choir of the sanctuary.
It is composed of a total of 216 tiles of baked and painted clay. Each of them measures 14 cm. on each side.
It shows the scene of the legendary apparition of the Virgin of El Rocío to a hunter in the forest of Las Rocinas. Thus, on the left side, and in the background, several leafy trees have been painted, with the sacred Marian image appearing on the top of two of them, in a break of glory, above some clouds. The scene is contemplated by a hunter who, accompanied by his dogs, is in the foreground in a prayerful attitude, kneeling before the heavenly apparition.
The whole scene is surrounded by a wide border with floral and leafy decoration, in which the names of the existing Brotherhoods appear in oval tondos. These are: Moguer, Huelva, Benacazón, San Juan del Puerto, Triana and Rociana.
In the lower left corner, in a painted cartouche, the authorship of this panel appears: M. G. MONTALVÁN ARTISTIC CERAMICS WORKSHOPS .
